The daily task of
fetching water
from distant sourcesIn order to access water essential for daily life, children must travel to distant water sources, preventing them from being able to attend school and pursue their studies.

Health issues caused
by unclean water,
including diarrheaEven when they manage to fetch water, many children suffer from diarrhea due to pathogens present in the water, and in the worst cases, this can lead to fatalities.

Risks of rape
and dangers posed
by wild animalsDuring their journeys to collect water, individuals also face the risk of fatal attacks by wild animals or falling victim to rape, leading to unwanted pregnancies.
Solution
In order to establish continuous water charge collection and thus sustainable hand-pump operation, we have built an automated charge collection system that does not rely on “humans” as conventional hand-pump management. Switching payment and management method to mobile money improve the safety of money collection management. Charging according to the usage, increase fairness, and residents can now pay with peace of mind.

Toward the social
implementation of SUNDAThis idea of SUNDA was conceived with Ugandan villagers during my time in Uganda as a volunteer from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 2018.
Many people in local villages were having trouble collecting fees to repair their broken hand pumps, and the District Water Office did not know what to do to this issue as a district. Because we developed this product in response to such voices, there are high expectations from the local communities. Also, as the number of installed units is gradually increasing, we have come to realize the importance and responsibility of being involved in the water infrastructure used by the local people. We will do our utmost to expand SUNDA as fast as possible, cooperating with people from around the world.
Recently, we have been working with Japanese engineering companies on the manufacturing part, which is the key to our expansion. Product design that meets local needs must be done by local engineers, but Japanese manufacturing know-how can help us to ensure stable quality. It is not an easy collaboration, but it is finally starting to work out. We are very excited about our journey ahead.
It is not easy at all to conduct manufacturing in Africa and solve Africa's water problems but we believe we can achieve this.
